No Disclaimers
Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil. Matthew 5:37 ESV
I love the words of Jesus. And one of my favorite things that He said is, “Let what you say be simply 'Yes' or 'No'.” For a while I've observed many people presenting their opinions or factual information about themselves on social media and then providing some kind of disclaimer for them. It can look like this, “I know I'm on a diet, but I had this really great piece of cake today.” It makes me think, why didn't you just say, “I had a great piece of cake”?
If you have chosen to share your thoughts or about events in your life, please receive permission from Jesus to simply do so without a disclaimer. This however, will require you to exercise wisdom and discernment about how and what you share. Jesus speaks about this also in Matthew 12:36-37 ESV:
“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Carefully chosen words require no explanation. If you find yourself typing a disclaimer along with your social media post, take a second and ask yourself, “Why do I feel this needs a disclaimer and who am I providing it for?” If what you've said is in alignment with Ephesians 4:29, feel free to nix the disclaimer. If not, prayerfully consider if you should release those words into the atmosphere.
Now that you know this truth, how happy you will be if you put it into practice! John 13:17 GNT
