The Business of Faith

I started my own consulting business this year. It wasn't particularly a dream of mine, it was more
like the logical thing to do for the season I was in. I knew I needed to make some changes and as I considered all of my options, going into business for myself seemed to be the best one. Almost a year into it, I see that it was more than just my rationale that led me to entrepreneurship.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Proverbs 16:9

That verse might be one of the biggest understatements in the Bible. While I sought the Lord as I started my company, I was doing all of the work without being aware of Him. I knew I wasn't in disobedience by having my own business and I knew that God would answer the prayers I was praying in relation to it. What I wasn't cognitive of was how He was going to use it to bolster my faith.

Now for as long as I have been a Christian, you would think that I would know that everything has a greater purpose than what it looks like externally. And even when I do remember that, I forget that there can be more than one application for the same thing. Owning my own business isn't just for my livelihood, it's part of my faith walk. Trusting God for provision of clients and resources requires me to rely on Him in a way that working for others cannot. It's hard and it has taken me out to the place that Hillsong describes as "where my trust is without borders." And while that feels extremely uncomfortable, it is very comforting to know that my steps will be established by the Lord.
