Parroting

The parrot is one of the most fascinating birds in the animal kingdom. They come in an array of brilliant colors and can be wild or domestic. They have very distinctive features, like a curved bill and some are able to mimic the human voice. Some are even able to be trained to associate objects with the words they can say.

Listening to a parrot use human words can be amusing, and even marvelous. But when believers imitate parrots by mimicking their pastors and Bible teachers, it is anything but marvelous. While a bird can be taught word-object association, contextual understanding may be a bit beyond its grasp. If we as believers do the same, only copy what our ministers have said without any understanding of what was said and why it was said, then all we can be is an attraction to those around us.

Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding  Proverbs 3:13

Seek to gain wisdom and understanding of what you hear from your spiritual leaders. Repeating what they have said may sound impressive in a conversation, but if you don't understand what you have spoken, you won't be equipped to answer any questions that arise from your words. The same applies to scripture that you memorize. It is fine to have passages and chapters of the Bible memorized, but it will not serve you well if you don't know what they mean.

God's word is powerful. As believers, we should speak it as royal priests, not parrots.
