Definitions: Ebenezer
Most people are familiar with the term Ebenezer as the formal name of the protagonist from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. This post is not about Christmas or being stingy.
Ebenezer is actually from the book of 1 Samuel. It is a compound Hebrew word comprised of eben and ezer. Eben means stone and ezer means help. The transliteration is 'Eben ha-`ezer - stone of help (ha is the article of).
1 Samuel 4-7, gives the account of the capture and return of the ark of the covenant. It is a tragic story but ultimately ends with the victory of God. It begins and ends with Ebenezer which reflects the nature of God. He is our stone of help who remains with us from the beginning of a situation, throughout it, to the end of it. Ebenezer points us to our God who is our stone of help through Jesus (the stone the builders rejected) and the Holy Spirit (the Helper who is given).
