Like a Child
Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.
Mark 10:15 ESV
The snapshot of the above verse in Christianese is to have a
childlike faith. I’ve heard it said many times, but I never really took the time
to study Mark 10:15 or ask God what it meant to receive like a child. Over the
past few weeks, I’ve been able to spend time with my nephews who range in age
from one and a half to nine years old. Observing them has helped me to
understand what it means to receive the kingdom of God like a child. Here are
my observations.
Be Yourself
Children vary in personality and temperament, which can be
seen early on in their lives – even in the womb! All of my nephews have
distinct characteristics about them that have been evident since their
beginnings. They don’t change for anyone and will not perform to strangers. God
expects you to be who He made you to be. If you are trying to be someone you’re
not, you’ll have a tough time receiving God’s kingdom.
Have No Cares
A child’s perspective on cares is very telling. My
three-year-old nephew demonstrates this the most. He is fearless about most
things that are dangerous and he gives no notice to warnings for his safety. He
isn’t concerned with what you are doing when he wants you; he just interrupts
you so that you pay attention to him. He is completely unaware of the
consequences of his actions and is joyful in just doing his thing. That’s
because he knows that if there is ever a problem, it’ll be taken care of and
not by him. Believers need to exercise wisdom of God's provision in their lives, not worry and fear. This will assist you in entering the kingdom.
Expect to be Taken Care Of
Children are not capable of doing many of the things
required to take care of themselves. They aren’t strong enough or they don’t
have the resources or they aren’t mature enough to manage their needs or their
lives nor do they believe that they are supposed to. You have to come to that
same realization in order to receive the kingdom. 1 Peter 5:7 KJV says,
“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”
Be Joyful and Excited
A vacuum cleaner usually does not provide a source of joy or
excitement for most adults (I see you cleaners). To my one and a half year old
nephew, it was one of the highlights of his visit. The broom and dustpan
provided equal joy and excitement for him. More than those, his ultimate
delight was in his grandfather. He sought him out and expressed his elation
with squeals and giggles. The kingdom of God is something we should have joy and excitement about!
Keep Things Simple
I got to say prayers with my nine-year-old nephew while I
was watching him and his brother. His requests were few and directly stated his
needs to God.
God desires for you to access His kingdom now (Mark 1:15,
Luke 17:21). He is your loving and faithful Father who takes care of you and
provides you with everything you need for life (2 Peter 1:3). Become like a
child, not childish, and you will receive the kingdom!
